This was a gift for a good friend. He mentioned he was looking around for a good pack axe. I did not think much of it but while working on another project a saw a bar of 4140 laying on the ground. What the heck!! I may as well try and forge an axe out of it. I took about a 2lb piece of the 1.25″ square 4140, like you see in the picture above the axe, and started moving steel. A couple hours later I had a formed axe that weighed about 20oz. I finished it by bead blasting using heavy stainless pins and canvas micarta on the handle. I left the micarta a little rougher than I would normally to provide a better grip.
